The Guatemalan armies used guerilla warfare in the Guatemalan Genocide. The armies seized 626 villages by attacking when they were already gathered for celebration or a market day (Genocide, 2014). Some of the villagers escaped, and then became hunted refugees. The others were brutally murdered in front of everyone, and some of the soldiers even forced Mayans to kill one another. The armies burned down, demolished, and vandalized buildings. They burned crops, killed livestock, destroyed sacred cultural items, and fouled the villages' water. This tactic was called 'scorched earth'.
Children were brutally beaten and thrown alive into pits while the adults were forced to watch. Victims' legs were amputated and were left to die slowly. Some were disemboweled while still alive, while others burned to death. Women were tortured with rape and pregnant women's wombs were cut open. The military also carried out planned executions and also forced Mayan "disappearances".
